BT Sport have revealed their list of pundits for the 2015/16 Premier League season, and former Select Group and World Cup Final referee Howard Webb is one of them. Webb's new role in punditry means he will leave his current role as Performance Director at the PGMOL with immediate effect.

There are also suggestions that Webb, 43, will act as a referee observer for UEFA, starting this season, although this is yet to be confirmed. Webb's decision to join BT Sport and leave his current position has come as a surprise to many, especially considering Webb has only spent a year working in the management team at PGMOL. It brings into question the leadership of Mike Riley (pictured right), who has been criticised by the likes of Keith Hackett, his predecessor, and Mark Halsey, former Premier League referee.

Webb, who is currently in New Zealand holding training sessions ahead of the U-20 FIFA World Cup (pictured left), will start his new role when the 2015/16 season commences in early August. It is currently not clear exactly what Webb will be doing, or how often he will be appearing on the broadcaster's football coverage.
There are suggestion that Webb grew frustrated with his lack of involment and impact in the day to day running of the PGMOL. This perhaps explains Webb's sudden change of role midway throught last season, when he became Performance Director after his initial appointment of Technical Director. After a quiet year following the 2014 FIFA World Cup, we're now likely to be seeing a lot more of Webb on our TV screens, analysing refereeing decisions from the BT Sport studio. |
