In the next edition of ‘Men in Black’, we take a look at Turkey’s top referee, FIFA Elite official Cüneyt Çakır.

Çakır's first big international match came when he got appointed to referee a Semi Final match in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League which saw Fulham second leg win against Hamburger SV. The following season saw Çakır’s debut in the Champions League when he took part in two of the group games.
UEFA Euro 2012 was a big highlight in Çakır’s career and this was where the more high profile games were being given to him. He refereed several group stage games and then was appointed fourth official in the Quarterfinal stage, and was then man in the middle for the Semi Final between Portugal and Spain. He was rewarded for a very good tournament as he was appointed as fourth official for the final.
Çakır continued to receive more high-profile matches, including the 2012 FIFA Club World Cup Final and, in 2014, he took charge of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Semi Final between Netherlands and Argentina. His most recent big achievement came not too long ago where he was appointed to referee the 2015 UEFA Champions League Final, which saw Barcelona beat Juventus in Berlin, Germany. |
