Victor Kassai began refereeing in NB I, the Hungarian professional league in 1996 at the age of 21. He was then promoted to a full time international referee for FIFA in 2003. His first major international tournament was the UEFA Euro 2008, however he was only ever apointed as fourth official during this competition. However in the previous year Kassai did referee group stage games in the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup. He also took part in the Olympics in 2008 where he also got appointed to the final in this competition.
Kassai was then appointed to the 2011 UEFA Champions League Final at Wembley which saw Barcelona beat Manchester United 3-1. In this game he cautioned two players from either team. The following year saw Kassai being sent to Poland to officiate in the 2012 UEFA Euro competition. In this competition he oversaw two group stage games, the second one which brought controversy. He was appointed to referee the group stage game between England and Ukraine where Victor Kassai incorrectly denied a goal for Ukraine when it had fully gone over the goal line. This mistake introduced the debate of the effectiveness of the officials on the goal line and the introduction of goal line technology. This was the last game in the 2012 Euro that Kassai officiated on.
